Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) celebrates the end of slavery in the United States, commemorating June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers brought news of freedom to Galveston, Texas—over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It is a national holiday symbolizing emancipation, African American resilience, and freedom.
